Japanese Alternate Art Planeswalkers : War of the Spark

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, and all those that may fall in between!

I am No Time Dad, thank you for stopping by! Today, I am bringing you a look at the alternate art Japanese planeswalkers from War of the Spark!

Why do they tease me so?

Let’s face it. The art direction is one of the most polarizing topics amongst the Magic community. Some feel Magic the Gathering has lost its character over the years, while others enjoy the more realistic art. I happen to fall happily between these two groups, appreciating both the whimsical and the gritty. One thing is certain, the art is beautiful no matter what side of the fence you fall on.

Why, oh why, can’t I throw money at Wizards for some English prints with Japanese arts? This is way better than that “Mythic Edition” trash!

Below I will share a few of my favorite picks from the new art as well as links to the full collections.

Vraska

This is one of my favorite alternate cards in this batch. I couldn’t help but feel let down by how bland the standard version of Vraska looks. She is a freakin’ Gorgon Golgari Queen! Add some spice to that girl!

There we go! That’s much better, look at that flair!

Narset

I think Narset had the most radical artistic change between prints. Here she is looking very serious, powerful.

Over in the Japanese art she becomes powerful magical girl waifu.

Liliana

Liliana is looking top-notch as always, commanding her undead thralls.

The Japanese art stuck out to me immediately. One quick glance to the bottom left to identify the artist confirmed my suspicions. I’ve always been a fan of the work Yoshitaka Amano did for the Final Fantasy series.

Gideon

The most basic, vanilla, white boy in the entirety of Magic the Gathering. I actually prefer his western art over the Japanese version, somehow the artist managed to make captain boring look pretty rad!

Aaaaand then he is back, with all his vanilla glory.

The Bottom Line

I am always excited to see alternate art, especially when the styles are radically different.
